Christian Aid Week 2019 has come and gone, and if you took part in this amazing week of fundraising then we want to say a massive thank you. We heard the reality of childbirth in Sierra Leone; the world’s most dangerous place to become a mum, that every day 10 women will die giving birth. We also heard that 1 in 9 children do not live to see their fifth birthday. Statistics that we are not prepared to stand back and allow to continue to happen. We heard the story of Jebbeh. Jebbeh was pregnant and it hadn’t been too long since she lost her sister Fatmata in childbirth at the side of the road while walking to the nearest hospital. Understandably Jebbeh was both filled with grief for her sister but also filled with fear about the prospect of delivering her own child. She told us she was afraid and that she prayed for God to help her deliver safely so she and her baby would both be healthy. Jebbeh gave birth to a son. Both mum and baby are healthy, happy and thriving. Together with the help of Christian Aid’s partners in Sierra Leonne we can help this image of happiness and health be the reality for lots more women in this country. We are building more health clinics, providing health training for nurses and improving hygiene and we thank you for standing with us as we empower women in these communities.
